How do I qualify?

To qualify, you must achieve a Qualifying Total in a USA Powerlifting, NAPF or IPF event between January 1, 2021, through the registration deadline.

I am a Master and Open lifter, when do I lift?

Full Meet: If you are a Master lifter with an Open qualifying total and want to place in the Open division, you must enter the Open division and lift on the day with the other Open competitors.  Likewise, if you want to place in the Masters division, you will need to enter and lift on the day for the Masters division.

Bench Only:  Masters lifters will be able to select both the Master and Open division for the bench-only competition due to all bench competitors lifting at the same time.

National Team Consideration: Only those entered in the Open division will be considered for the Open National Team.  If you are a Master aged lifter who lifts in the Open division, your Open total will be eligible for the Master's Nationals Team selection.  2021 National Team Criteria

Can I enter before I have a qualifying total?

Yes, you can enter Nationals prior to achieving a qualifying total.  If you do not achieve a qualifying total by the entry deadline, you will forfeit your entry and entry fee and will not be eligible to compete.

Will I be drug tested?

If you enter this event, you may be selected to be drug tested.  Lifters are notified by the Drug Testing Officer (DCO) generally at the completion of the lifting session.  If you have completed all your attempts and want to leave prior to the awards ceremony, you must check in with the DCO to make sure you have not been selected for drug testing.  This includes if you have weighed in and decided not to lift, injured yourself during the competition and withdraw or bomb, you are still in the drug testing pool.

Failure to be available when called for drug testing will be considered a doping failure.

I am taking medication prescribed by my doctor, is that OK?

Medications prescribed by your doctor may be considered a prohibited substance.  You must check all your medications.  If the medication is prohibited, it may be allowed by receiving a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).

USA Powerlifting Rules

Please review the USA Powerlifting Rulebook to be informed.

Approved Equipment

Only IPF Approved equipment is allowed at National events.  Please review the IPF Approved List to make sure your equipment can be worn prior to gear check.

Can I change weight classes?

If you are moving up a weight class, your qualifying total in the lower class must be equal to or greater than the qualifying total of the higher weight class.

If you wish to go down in weight class you will need to RE-QUALIFY in your new weight class by the entry deadline.

If your weight class change keeps you in the same 'session' you will be able to move.

If it would move you into another session, you are not guaranteed to be lifting in the session with their new weight class due to session size restrictions.

  • Move down a weight class and are unable to lift in your newly declared weight class session, you will lift as a guest lifter due to the advantage you will have knowing what their competition has totaled prior to you competing.
  • Move up a weight class, your total will be counted towards the total in their newly declared weight class because you will be at a disadvantage for lifting prior to the rest of your competitors.

We will make every effort to move individuals within the session their newly declared weight class will be competing, but there are no guarantees due to session size restrictions in 2021.

How are weigh-ins conducted at Nationals?

Unlike many local level meets, weigh-ins are conducted by 'Lot Numbers.'  A lot number is a randomly assigned number to each athlete, within each session.

When it is time for your weigh-ins, be there when it starts.  The Referee will call you in order of your assigned Lot Number, NOT by when you show up.  If you are not present when you are called, you will go to the back of the weigh-in order.

For more information, please refer to the Rulebook.

Can I set a State Record at Nationals?

YES!  Any State record you break will automatically be credited once results are uploaded into the results database.

Can I be a Guest Lifter?

Guest lifters are only allowed under the following conditions:

  • You are a Youth lifer, age 13 and will 14 by the date of the IPF SubJr event, you may lift as a Guest at Nationals.  You will not be competing within the Teen division, but only as a Guest.
  • You did not make weight and do not have a qualifying total for the higher weight class, you will be allowed to compete as a Guest and not place in the higher weight class.

Guest lifting is not permitted for anyone who can not meet the criteria of our membership.

Guest lifting is not permitted for other IPF member nations.
